As is public knowledge, 2023 will be a year that will mark a before and after in terms of the levels of waste management and treatment in our country (referred to as "Priority Products" (PP) in the REP Law).
The first of these six PPs that will begin to be regulated will be Category A Out of Use Tires (NFU); regulations that begin today, Friday, January 20, and that will be managed through the End-of-Use Tires Collective Management System (NFU) in order to organize and finance the collection and recovery of tires sold in the Chilean market that reach the end of of its useful life.
In this sense, and as a context, the Law requires that the collection and recovery goals of each PP must be met through a Management System, which will be the "instrumental mechanism for producers, individually or collectively, to comply to the obligations established within the framework of the Law”, which they must do through the implementation of a Management Plan that must be approved by the Ministry of the Environment (MMA).
Specifications and goals for category A tires
Category A tires are considered to be all those with a rim less than 57 inches, with the exception of those with a rim equal to 49 inches and 51 inches.
Regarding the goals established for this type of tire, the regulations establish that, from the first calendar year of validity, the Management Systems must value, at least, 25% of the tires introduced into the national market the immediately previous year. ; by the sixth year it must value 80%, while from the eighth year the goal is at least 90%.
To support companies in meeting these goals, at Hidronor we provide recycling solutions for small-scale tires such as trucks and vehicles through Greendot, a company that is part of our own company.
