The WMO warned that the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has reached an all-time high.
This Thursday, October 24, the International Day against Climate Change is celebrated, one of the most urgent challenges of our time.
According to the State of the World Climate Report 2022, from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the last 7 years have been the warmest in recorded history, with an increase in global temperature of 1.1°C compared to the preindustrial era. In addition, sea level has risen 15 cm since 1993, and the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has reached an all-time high of 415 parts per million.
In Latin America, climate change is having a significant impact on the region's biodiversity and economy. According to the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), climate change could cost the region up to $100 billion annually by 2050.
Hazardous and non-hazardous waste
Waste has a significant impact on climate change, e.g.
1. Greenhouse gas emissions: The decomposition of organic waste in landfills produces methane (CH4), a powerful greenhouse gas.
2. Air and water pollution: Burning waste can release toxic gases and fine particles that pollute air and water.
3. Use of resources and energy: The production, transportation and disposal of waste requires resources and energy, which contributes to the emission of greenhouse gases.
4. Reduction of biodiversity: The accumulation of waste can affect habitats and ecosystems, reducing biodiversity.
5. Impact on human health: Exposure to toxic waste can cause health problems, such as cancer and respiratory diseases
In Chile, waste management is a crucial challenge in the fight against climate change. In 2022, more than 7.3 million tons of waste were generated in Chile, of which only 12% was recycled. However, at Hidronor we have managed to recover and recycle more than 150,000 tons of materials in the last 5 years, which represents a 30% reduction in the amount of waste that reaches landfills.
Committed to caring for the environment, at Hidronor we recover more than 12,000 tons of hazardous waste annually.
Within the framework of the International Day against Climate Change, we call on companies and communities to work together to reduce their environmental impact.
