We talk about contamination of soil when there is a high concentration of pollutants on the surface, which that affects biodiversity and puts the health of all beings at risk alive through food or, depending on the type of pollutant, direct contact with it.
Industrial activities and livestock are the main causes of this contamination, due to the substances they use for their production processes and toxic waste that generate: drugs, pesticides, fertilizers, heavy metals, substances chemicals, among others.
According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), if not controlled in time, this pollution, which already affects a third of the world's soil, will take a thousand years to create 1 centimeter of renewed topsoil. For this reason, we tell you some actions to implement and reduce soil contamination:
- Recycle cells and batteries (regulation under discussion in the Rep. Law in Chile).
- Encourage industry, agriculture and ecological livestock, among other economic activities.
- Improve wastewater treatment and reform mining waste management (there are companies in Chile dedicated to this management, such as Hidronor).
The call is to become aware of the serious consequences that soil contamination can cause in don't start taking corrective action now. Let's work together for a world more sustainable!
