Since 2005, like every year, May 17th is known for promoting worldwide recycling with initiatives that seek to increase the culture and importance of this activity in order to reduce the serious impact of climate change and protect the environment.
Every time, more and more countries are taking part in promoting this message and, as the years go by, it becomes evident in each one in their recycling rates increase. However, the road ahead is still quite long, which is why joint work between governments, companies and civil society is necessary to achieve the expected goals.
The good news is that, today, we can contribute with small industrial or household actions to the recycling increase thanks to initiatives associated with the 4Rs. They are:
- Reduce: The aim of the concept is to create less waste than what we generate. For example, plan your weekly menu in order to avoid wasting food and avoid generating new waste as much as possible.
- Re-use: When something is no longer beneficial for us, we can give it a new use. If it’s in good condition it can be useful to someone else.
- Recycle: Turn waste into new and functional products!
- Recover: When avoiding, reusing or recycling waste is no longer possible other companies can use it to create new products. An example of this is the clean energy that we generate at Hidronor from the biogas extracted from the waste deposited in our landfill.
By putting these 4 ideas into practice, we will be contributing to reducing the consumption of water and energy, as well as creating new sources of work, generating social awareness, reducing CO2 emissions and protecting the environment and its ecosystem.
Let's take action!
