As part of the progress that our country continues to establish to regulate the management of waste that is moved or enters the country, recently the Council of Ministers for Sustainability and Climate Change approved, among other initiatives, the Regulation of Transboundary Movement of Waste, the which establishes the requirements, requirements and procedures for the control of this activity, thus responding to the commitments assumed after ratifying the Escazú Agreement.

Among other aspects, this regulation establishes, for example, the prohibition of importing into Chile hazardous waste intended for disposal that comes from other countries or that may be exported abroad, as well as regulating its transit through areas subject to national jurisdiction.

The initiative is aligned with the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal, based on the decisions and recommendations of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and what is mandated by the Law on Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR Law).
