As is well known, the Chilean economy is driven by mining activity carried out mainly in the north of the country, which has resulted in the generation of tailings equivalent to the size of Cerro Santa Lucía (located in the RM with 65,300 m2) every 30 hours. of extension).

As a result, we currently have 176 abandoned mine tailings, which are highly toxic because they contain metals such as arsenic, lead, mercury and cyanide salts, among others, which put people's health and the stability of the environment at risk. ecosystem. Thus, Chile is positioned as the third country in the world with the largest amount of this waste.

Although there are currently laws that regulate the correct closure of these tailings, such as Law 20,551 that seeks to establish a general Roadmap with certain conditions and requirements, there is still a lot of work to be done in terms of mining regulation.

In this sense, Pablo Gutiérrez, manager of Institutional Relations of Hidronor Chile, highlights that "current regulations must be taken as a basis for environmental sanitation actions, and not as a compliance ceiling imposed by the regulatory triangle in mining matters. This must be considered as a base that establishes a floor on which to build the mining of the future”.

To help meet this milestone, at Hidronor we are constantly developing and innovating, always seeking the best alternatives available in the market to provide a quality service and work for the remediation and restoration of contaminated land, which ultimately positively impacts the sustainability of our environment.
