An important ministerial department launched the “Recycling is Cumbia” campaign, which aims to disseminate the Extended Producer Responsibility (REP) law that will begin to operate in the coming days, establishing a better way to recycle containers and packaging.

On October 2, the recycling law for containers and packaging will begin to operate. The regulations - which will be implemented gradually - require companies that put packaged products on the market, organized in a management system, to take charge of their collection and recycling, establishing differentiated goals by material.

The goals will allow the country to go from the current 12.5% recycling of household containers and packaging to 60% of these elements in the medium term, equivalent to developed countries. The decree establishes specific goals for each material: cardboard for liquids (60%), metal (55%), paper and cardboard (70%), plastics (45%) and glass (65%).

To achieve these goals, a “recycling truck” will gradually pass through 80% of the country's homes to look for these containers. In parallel, there will also be more clean or green points as an alternative to recycling.

In year 1 of application of the goals, it is established that 10% of the country's households will have recyclable products removed from their homes, however, progress will be made gradually until reaching coverage of 80% of Chilean households. for year 12 (2034). While for the clean or green points there will be a period of four years to be in approximately 75% of the communes in Chile.
