On May 17, 2016, President Michelle Bachelet enacted the Recycling and Extended Producer Responsibility (REP) law. Law that seeks to reduce and revalue the 17 million tons of annual waste generated in the country, of which 7 million are household waste.
It should be remembered that there are six products categorized as priority, since they are for mass consumption, of significant volume, most of them fall into the category of hazardous waste and are feasible to recover:
- Lubricant oils
- Electrical and electronic devices
- Containers and packaging
- Batteries
- Batteries
- Tires
Let us remember that this law obliges companies and / or producers to register in a public castrato of entrepreneurs and / or manufacturers; organize and finance the collection and treatment of collected products through a management system that ensures that waste treatment is carried out by authorized companies and that they meet the collection and recovery goals of these products, if not, fines can be up to 10 Annual Tax Units (UTA).
Based on this, the Executive gave a period of one year to the Ministry of the Environment, to draw up decrees to the producers.
