Increase in contaminated waste during the COVID19 pandemic

After the detection of the first case in Chile of Coronavirus, a series of sanitary measures were activated, one of them the advancement of vaccination against influenza. But this measure entails a no less process that has to do with the transfer and treatment of hospital waste, such as syringes, cottons not counting the nearly 8 million masks that are already circulating, which are added to other waste classified as dangerous or infectious, without prior treatment, which could undoubtedly become a health threat.

According experts in the field, in the main institutions that have received patients with COVID19 has seen an increase of almost 25% in the generation of waste, in the next weeks and depending on the progress of the emergency situation there will be 75% of the occupation of hospital facilities, which can generate 90 tons daily waste contaminated. For this reason, they suggest applying conditions for the management of these wastes and propose that the authority sanitary promote instructions for the entities that generate this waste in order to safeguard the correct management and ensure that the pandemic does not spread.
