According to MINSAL, any container that contained a hazardous substance or waste is considered contaminated with that substance or waste and, therefore, said container is considered hazardous waste.
In Chile, each year, more than 18 million tons of waste are generated, of which 600,000 tons are equivalent to hazardous waste. A worrying figure, considering, even more so, that in 2022 only 20% of non-hazardous waste was recovered.
It is because of this alarming scenario that, in an effort to address the environmental crisis and promote a circular economy model, at Hidronor we offer a comprehensive service for the recovery and recycling of contaminated packaging and packaging waste.
According to the provisions of D.S.N°148/2003 Regulation on Sanitary Management of Hazardous Waste, of the MINSAL, any container that contained a hazardous substance or waste is considered contaminated with that substance or waste, and therefore, said container is considered waste. dangerous.
Hidronor and the reuse and recycling of packaging
Every year, we recover more than 10,000 tons of waste, of which more than 3,000 correspond to plastics and packaging. How do we carry out this process?
- Reception and Classification: Plastic and metal containers are received and classified.
- Decontamination: Decontamination processes are carried out to eliminate hazardous waste, through washing.
- The water resulting from washing is treated within the Hidronor facilities (waste circuit without generation of liquid effluents).
- Packaging that meets standards is reused
- Decontaminated packaging is processed for recycling:
- Compaction: They are compacted for easy handling.
- Baling: They are organized into bales ready for recycling.
- Recovery: Recycled materials are sent to recycling plants to be transformed into new products.
Efficient recycling, as we promote at Hidronor, allows us to recycle 108 tons/month of plastics and 24,000 iron drums annually, promoting the circular economy.
