Chile, a major producer of mining waste

LinkedIn

Published on March 19, 2018.-

The marked decrease in the average grade of the minerals extracted and processed, both in the mines currently in operation and in the new mining projects, produced a significant increase in the generation of massive waste that must be managed and disposed of responsibly.

In Chile, for each ton of mineral extracted, it is necessary to remove between 2 and 3 tons of material, which generates between 300 and 400 tons of hazardous mining waste, producing more than one million tons of tailings and more than two million tons of waste per day. .

These are the reasons why mining has become the largest generator of waste and therefore experts do not hesitate to say that there must be a massive mining waste management project, since in Chile there are no environmental regulations that establish requirements for management and final disposal of these wastes.
