Despite the logistical difficulties involved in holding a large-scale event at the end of the year and the impossibility of a date change, Chile is already organizing the next meeting of the United Nations Conference of the Parties (COP), the summit on most important climate change in the world.

This version, which will be held between December 2 and 13, will be number 25 and hopes to bring together senior representatives from 197 countries, around 25 thousand people.

Regarding the place where it will take place, the Minister of the Environment, Carolina Schmidt, recently reported that three alternatives are being analyzed in Santiago. With one of them you would already be in the last conversations.

What is the COP?

COP is the acronym for Conference of the Parties and refers to those who signed the Framework Convention on Climate Change, adopted in 1992 to address the effects of global warming and the control of greenhouse gases. These meetings started in 1995 in Berlin and have been held every year since.

The decision of the COP plenary to elect Chile as the organizer would respond to the positive vision it has on Chile's action against climate change, since it was the first developing country to submit a report on national emissions inventories. of greenhouse gases from 1990 to 2016 (Third Biennial Update Report of Chile on Climate Change).

Minister Schmidt commented that one of the Government's objectives is for this event to help “accelerate the transformation process we need towards sustainable development and effective climate action with the incorporation of more actors. That is why the participation of civil society, young people, the private world, and companies is key to advancing with greater force in climate action both in Chile and in the world ”.
