Lead is a naturally occurring toxic metal in the earth's crust. Its widespread use has resulted in significant environmental pollution and serious public health problems in many parts of the world.
The main sources of environmental pollution include mining, metallurgy, some specific manufacturing activities and in some countries, the persistent use of lead paints and gasoline. Drinking water piped through lead pipes or lead-based solder may also contain lead. Today, much of the lead traded on world markets is obtained through recycling.
People can be affected in their environment, through the inhalation of lead particles generated by the combustion of materials that contain this metal. Exposure to lead can cause anemia, hypertension, kidney dysfunction, immunotoxicity, and reproductive toxicity.
The WHO has included lead among a list of ten chemicals that cause serious public health problems that require Member States to intervene to protect the health of workers, children and women of childbearing age.
