Chile at the international level and in environmental matters has firmly addressed the global challenges to achieve sustainable development during this decade, stimulating the social responsibility of companies through various international conventions and agreements. Supreme Decree No. 685 published on October 13, 1992, ratifies the Basel Convention that regulates the control of transboundary movements of hazardous wastes and their disposal. Its objective is to protect the environment and human health against the harmful effects derived from the generation of waste, its improper handling, transboundary movements and the elimination of hazardous waste.
Said Agreement, currently It has 170 member countries who apply the procedure of the "Prior informed consent", establishing that shipments made without consent are illegal, the same is the shipment made to a State and from a State that is not a party to the agreement. Cross-border movements of hazardous waste and not hazardous, should be allowed only when transport and final disposal of such residues are environmentally sound, through strict control of human health and environment against the harmful effects that can be derived from the generation and handling of this type of waste.
