Climate, demographic, technological and geopolitical change are the key factors considered in the annual risk survey carried out by the World Economic Forum and which each year seeks to set the course of what is to come and the potential danger that society faces, taking into account all those aspects.
Result? The negative perspective predominates. The majority (54%) of the more than 1,500 interviewed anticipate instability and “moderate risk” of global catastrophes. Another 30% expect much more turbulent conditions, even. If the horizon is 10 years, the scenario is worse, almost two-thirds of the survey say they anticipate a stormy or turbulent scenario.
The report “The Global Risk Report”, prepared with insurers Marsh McLennan and Zurich Insurance Group, points out that “environmental risks could reach the point of no return” and continue to dominate concerns. In fact, extreme weather is listed as “the most likely risk of presenting a material crisis on a global scale in 2024, with the warm phase of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) cycle projected to intensify and persist until May of this year . It is also considered the second most severe risk in the two-year time frame and, as in last year's rankings, almost all environmental risks appear in the top ten in the long term.
