The term “bioplastics” can be confusing because it designates both bio-based plastics (made from renewable natural components) and biodegradable plastics.
They are made from plant cells, mainly sugar cane, corn starch and potato and are intended to replace conventional plastic. Likewise, the implementation of these materials could considerably reduce the pollution of the water of the seas and the environment in general.
Global bioplastics production capacities are mostly in Asia (56%), which is also the main traditional plastics manufacturing region, Europe (18%) and North America (16%).
According to the European Federation, a growth of 19% in the production of bioplastics is expected in the world between 2017 and 2022.
