Abandoned tailings are a latent problem for the regions in which they are located. In addition to this, there are approximately 740 mining tailings in Chile.
Because of this, the Ministry of Mining proposed the new National Tailings Policy, which aims to remediate and reprocess abandoned mining sites.
For the implementation of this new policy, the pioneer regions will be those of Coquimbo and Atacama, implementing inclusive monitoring so that communities are duly informed in those sectors where active tailings are found and, in the case of inactive or abandoned ones, carry out a survey. of information to identify owners and ensure the safety and physical and chemical stability of the deposits.
